An interactive learning experience with Melbourne Water.

Last week our latest interactive experience was launched as part of Melbourne Water’s revamped approach to water literacy education at the Western Treatment Plant.

The result of two years of collaboration, The Future Water Story invites secondary school students across the greater Melbourne region to explore and experiment with the challenges of water management in an increasingly uncertain world.

Secondary school students wear customised hi-vis vests as they engage with an immersive education experience at Melbourne Water’s Western Treatment Plant Digital Education Centre.

Interactive education transforms water literacy

Entering The Future Water Story, visitors take on the role of local community groups who have come to WTP as part of an initiative to provide the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed to close the loop on future water systems.

Here visitors will make decisions to balance water as an empowering and limiting force. As they play, visitors will be able to feel the consequences of their  choices – and those made by the groups around them – in real time as they work to create the best future suburb they can.

Immersion blends the physical and digital worlds

From the customised vests presented to students upon arrival through to the huge central floor display, each element of the spatial and experience design was focused on creating a sense of immersion.

We were also lucky enough to work with representatives from Wadawurrung, the Traditional Owners of the land on which the Western Treatment Plant sits. This collaboration allowed us to integrate indigenous symbols that told the story of the land, as well as that of the experience.

An industry-leading education centre

The Future Water Story is now up and running at Melbourne Water’s Western Treatment Plant. The interactive experience complements the existing behind-the-scenes tour of the onsite facility to deliver an end-to-end education experience for secondary school students.

Speaking at the grand opening, Minister for Water Harriet Shing reinforced the importance of innovative approaches to water literacy,

The kids will learn through the simulation that what works for the wider community doesn’t always work for them, so they have to find a way through with compromise.
