An art installation inspired by the Great Barrier Reef
After taking a break last year, we’re stoked to be back for this year’s Vivid Sydney. Teaming up with Qantas, we’ve created Revive The Reef, an interactive installation inspired by the Great Barrier Reef.
Revive The Reef invites visitors to step into a virtual reef complete with interactive coral, thousands of light-refracting fish, and a vibrant soundtrack of real sounds from the Reef. While inside, visitors are given the chance to symbolically unwind the pressures threatening the Great Barrier Reef.
Working together, visitors can turn coral handles to bring life to the virtual reef around them. With each turn of the handles, the environment transforms around them from bleached white to an explosion of kaleidoscopic colour and sound. While interacting alone makes a small difference, it’s only by working together that visitors can make a real impact.
The interactive experience in Revive The Reef allows every passerby the chance to shape their own unique narrative. Our goal is to tell a story of empowerment. No matter how big or small our actions are, we can make a difference and protect the things that matter.
Revive The Reef isn’t just a celebration of the Great Barrier Reef, but a tangible way for us to make a positive difference for the Reef’s future. Indeed, for every social post with the hashtag #ReviveTheReef, Qantas will carbon offset a flight between Sydney and Cairns.
According to Qantas, the installation represents the larger fight against climate change:
Ticking-the-box to Fly Carbon Neutral is one small, tangible action customers can take to help our planet and the Reef. The Revive The Reef installation is a great example of how, by working together, even small actions can make big changes.
You can find Revive The Reef beside the MCA in The Rocks throughout Vivid Sydney 2018. Lights will be on from 6pm – 11pm each night, from 25 May – 16 June.
